Stuart is a Cumbrian landscape artist based in the nearby iconic Eden Valley.
Stuart is regularly found walking the Ullswater fells, always armed with his sketchbook and camera, constantly on the lookout for breaks in the cloud or passing storms that result in what he calls magic moments.
His work is marked by these brief, usually majestic snapshots in time, punctuated by strong contrasts of light and shadow, a fascination for Stuart since childhood with breaking light and how it caresses the landscape.
This view from Gowbarrow is no exception, heavy clouds dominating the steep climb up onto Gowbarrow Fell from Dockray, clearing suddenly upon reaching the well known viewpoint and memorial seat, with stupendous views over Ullswater, with glorious light flooding the valley below. Stuart had no option but to snap it on his phone, and once back in his studio began laying down the first colours while the scene was still fresh in his mind.
Stuart's painting style is immediate and instinctive, using implied detail, bolder colours, impasto paint, scratching and scraping all employed.
Stuart's approach is always the same,” first find the light”. Describing himself as “an old fashioned landscape painter” Stuarts work reflects the incredible landscape that inspires him, encouraging the viewer to observe his work with some imagination, looking beyond the commonly seen and known, to the sublime that is fleeting.
