More about Haydn Morris
I am a landscape painter working in my studio in Tirril, on the road from Ullswater to Penrith. I work mainly in oil and watercolour, and occasionally use acrylics and pastels.
The painting, Ullswater from Auterstone, was painted from the Ullswater Way, through a gate in the fell wall, below Arthur’s Pike. It’s one of a series of paintings which explores the Edge of the Fell, a rich and varied landscape, where cultivated farmland meets open country.
There are many signs of man’s activities from days when more people worked the land – ancient walls, barns, sheepfolds and trackways. Farming has changed and today the fell edge is gradually being reclaimed by nature. The little farm of Auterstone tells of a bygone era, and I wonder about the farmers and their families who used to live and work in this isolated farmstead. I hope they were able to appreciate the magnificent view of Ullswater and the Helvellyn mountains.
My style is somewhere between impressionism and expressionism. For me, atmosphere is more important than too much detail. Leaving something to your imagination may stimulate you to engage with the work more closely and perhaps enjoy it more too.
Another reason for my impressionist approach is that I want to create an interesting composition in an abstract sense – through an appealing arrangement of colours, shapes, lines, tones and textures. This leads me to move things around a little and perhaps change or exaggerate the colours – but I always aim to express the atmosphere and sense of place which I experienced at the time.
I welcome visitors to my studio gallery in the centre of Tirril near the Queens Head. Just ring to check I'm in.
